About Cártama, Málaga
Cártama (Estación and Pueblo) is a town and village in the province of Málaga with a good selection of properties for sale and rent. It is part of the autonomous community of Andalucía in southern Spain. Older and newer properties mix together to offer a wide choice of accommodations. The town and village offer a lively, interesting way of life. Situated in the heart of the Guadalhorce valley, at the foot of two small sierras, and surrounded by thousands of orange and lemon trees yet Cártama is only 17 km from the city of Málaga and 15 - 20 minutes from the airport of Málaga.
Attractions and areas of interest
One of Cártama Estación’s most well-known features, albeit a practical one, is the green iron bridge (Puente hierro verde) over the Guadalhorce river which separates Cártama Pueblo and Estación. The green bridge provided access between Estación and the pueblo before its replacement by a more modern road bridge. This area has been restored as a recreational area, and an extensive riverside leisure area is now planned.
Within Cártama Pueblo is the Castillo (Castle), behind the patron saint hermitage. It is the most ancient monument in the locality, erected by it’s first settlers. The town’s patron saint Ermita de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, perched high above the winding streets of Cártama Pueblo is still a focus of pilgrimage for devout locals. For the energetically inclined a good climb of the hundreds of steps that zig zag to the shrine from the main square near the Pilar Alto fountain may be of interest! (Do check that it is open before setting off and take plenty of water to drink).
The lively town and pueblo have many shops, bars and restaurants serving mainly traditional Spanish food with a few bars serving English food. There’s a huge weekly Sunday market within walking distance of Estación selling lots of fresh local fruit, veg, clothing and many other goods which attracts hundreds of shoppers and visitors from near and far.
There are local Spanish schools and the Sunland International English speaking school is very near, between Cártama and Pizarra, Málaga.
